Beeches and Blue Skies

Slush, snow, and sleet mingle
In the heart of winter.

The world is ever changing:
Layers melt and refreeze
Before our eyes; temperatures
Rise and fall like ancient kings;
Bundles are shed, with
Momentary joy, and, then, are
Compiled all over again.

Consistency rests on mountains
Alone. On the peaks snow
Piles higher and the cold
Remains, but in the valley
Nothing is certain. There
The roads hide beneath fog
And rain and snow and ice,
While hearts cling to false
Expectations. Schools close
For storms that never come
And are open for a squall.
In one moment reflective
Particles sail through the air
And in the next lakes crack
Like leafless trees. A dim
Grey darkness covers the
Land followed by a
Beautiful stroke of blue.

The world is one way and another,
And no one knows what is next.
